Time Spent: 15 mins
Main Idea: We are not of the world
What I learned about God: Jesus is not of this world
Summary: This is a short 4 verses in the book of John but such a small amount of Scripture can mean so much. Jesus is speaking about how He comes to the world speaking upon the new life that God has planned for us through Jesus and how we may be the ones to enjoy our lives rather than having to struggle and sacrifice for atonement of our own sins. It then explains how when Jesus spoke of these things, people rejected it because it was so foreign of an understanding to them that they couldn't comprehend what Jesus was saying, but then Jesus explains how it is possible since it is impossible for them to completely understand because Jesus is not a part of the world as they are not a part of Him. Jesus then explains how we must comfort them but not taking them out of their world, but instead we must protect them from all temptations and lifestyles of this world. He then reiterates how in following what Jesus has brought for us, we will not be of the world just as Jesus is not part of the world.
Application: Going through college has to be one of the hardest things to do with being a Christian. Being open to all these new types of beliefs and having fun, it truly has been a struggle. Even though I go to a community college, I still feel the struggle of having to deny my fleshly desires in order to keep my heart in God. As I grow stronger as a believer and having more opportunities, I begin to see the separation that is becoming in between my friends that party and the friends that go to church. This verse just reminded me of that gap that I see visible in my own life, but then as God shows us through the passage, we must be the ones to bring them over that gap in order for them to be away from the evil one and his temptations and to be more on the side in which Jesus is and how we is not a part of the world as we follow to choose Him. The good news of Jesus is what I must not be afraid to go up to people and introduce them to Jesus so that they can be led away from the evil one and how I can truly open myself up to others. I feel this is a developing skill in which it will greatly help me though missions and in my life with Christ.
