Genesis 22:1-18 The Sacrifice of Isaac

Quiet Time 3/31/10

Time Spent: 35 minutes

Main Idea: God is testing Abraham to see if he is able to give up Isaac as a sacrifice to Him.

What I learned about God: God is a being in which He tests us, but when we overcome these tests, He will truly bless us for enduring.

Summary: In the book of Genesis, Abraham is confronted by God as He asks Abraham to do something that would be unimaginable for anyone that was not a God-fearing man. God asks Abraham to sacrifice Isaac as a burnt sacrifice unto God. Abraham, being the obedient man that he was, he followed God's orders and it took 3 days to approach the mountain in which God told him to go and sacrifice Isaac. Abraham walked up with Isaac and prepared the altar. As Abraham was about to fully commit Isaac's life as a sacrifice to God, an Angel of the Lord appeared to him and stopped him from sacrificing Isaac. God saw this faith that Abraham had within that he provided a proper offering and promised Abraham offspring as many as the stars in the sky and how they will all possess their enemy's gates.

Application: Abraham was not afraid of following God's command at all because Abraham knew that God had a greater plan in all that He had commanded, even though it was to command the death of his own son. Abraham was faithful to God and followed His every command without hesitating. This reminds me of when I feel that God tests me to do something better in that i am so comfortable in the life that i have but lately this week has been extremely tough. I don't know whether it is the devil hindering me from my mission training and my school work but I have also noticed the difference of God testing me compared to being tempted in that through God's tests I might be blessed through Him in ways that I can never imagine. As this week has drained me, through all the late nights, i have not failed to complete my daily devotion no matter what that it takes me to finish it. I will make it a promise to God that I will do my daily devotion everyday before I sleep for the night. It does kill me inside at school each and everyday to be staying up until 4 am for school and mission work, I feel through this, God is testing my determination and my long prayed for topic of diligence and it is just surfacing upon my actions. I will finish every devotion for the rest of mission training. In each and every moment that I may be suffering, that is just another moment i become closer to God.
