Proverbs 4:20-27 Your wisdom physical (sans the coughing)

4/14/10

Time Spent: 15 min

Main Idea: The father urges the son to concentrate with all of his being (heart, mouth, eyes, feet) in order to be devoted to wisdom.

What I Learned about God: God demands a complete transformation from our sinful nature to the new self in Christ.

Summary: This passage talks about the seeking of wisdom in relation to various body parts. The heart (v.23), the inner beings of the person must be kept with all vigilance for from it is the "outflow of life". The characteristic of the "true life" we were meant to live in God is through the upkeep we have in our heart. The father then moves onto the mouth (v.24), that the son would guard against crooked and flippant speech. Next is the eyes (v.25),that one would have tunnel-vision in seeking wisdom; making sure that all decisions are under the ultimate umbrella of wisdom. Finally, it is the feet (v.27), which makes vision turn into practical action. All of these must be taken into careful consideration if one desires to be wise. Daily we need a spiritual physical from the Lord in order that we would be wise in the eyes of God.

Application: Loving the Lord with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength is a reflection that God demands our total worship. Understanding this truth, all areas of our lives and our beings are to be rendered unto Him in worship. Where I fail in doing this is in the "feet". Examining the way I spend my day, I could see that it fails to live up to the lofty visions I have for the Lord. I spend it in frivolous activities because I need a "break" from school and reading. However, these do nothing for the goal and desire that I have to be an instrument of impact for the Lord here and in Japan. The result of my time wasting involves two evils set before me: facebook and youtube. Thus, I will make it a habit to check facebook once a day at night and youtube so I could go somewhere with the visions God has given me. Maybe I can start on my sermon earlier or I could finish a book I was meaning to finish. In any case, I need to take practical steps in going towards the vision which God has called me towards. Soli deo gloria
