Proverbs 8:22-31 Wisdom's Role in Creation

4/20/10

Time Spent: 15 min

Main Idea: Wisdom was there even amongst the work of God during the creation of the world.

What I learned about God: Understanding that the agent of creation was through the Son, Jesus Christ (Col. 1:17-19; Rev. 3:14) we note that it is the wisdom of God, Jesus Christ that is fully described in these verses.

Summary: Wisdom personified as calling towards the children of man is seen here from the very foundation of the earth. Wisdom is the one that is crying and calling out, asking that people listen to her rather than the banter of the adulteress. Now, wisdom seeks to share some of her characteristics with the people; sharing that it has stems even from the dawn of creation. It is the LORD who possessed wisdom at work and wisdom was immersed throughout the work of God's creation. Surely when we look at who this person of wisdom is, Paul sheds some light that it is Jesus Christ (Col. 1:17). he was the agent responsible for the creation of the world and he is the one that is attributed as wisdom personified. Thus Proverbs is showcasing the display not of God's judgment, but the power and wisdom of His Son. He is the one worthy of the praise and glory, who was from the beginning and will endure until the end.

Application: Understanding that Christ is God's wisdom from the very beginning has implications to my life. For example, if Christ is God's wisdom, then we need to understand that his life is the one which is the "right life" to live. I have the tendency to not like the appeal of Jesus's life, which was marked with a nomadic movement and travel which does not beset me. The motives and ways in which he dealth with people also shine as examples to my sinful face of all the times I dare not engage or talk to people who had offended me. Recognizing that Jesus is God's wisdom places this whole book of Proverbs in perspective: that wisdom does not come from doing the words that are listed here but pointing to the wisdom that was there before creation; Jesus Christ. Today as I close this very long day, I want to pray that God fills me with wisdom, which is filling me with more of Christ in my life. Making his characteristics and actions as my own. This is what I wanted when I study Proverbs, to make Christ more apparent in my life.
