Main Idea: The righteous man is defined as one who restrains words and is a man of understanding.
What I Learned about God: God's not so much impressed by the doing as He is of your being. Many words do not impress the Lord.
Summary: This phrase comes up twice in Proverbs, once here and another time in 18:2. In this usage, it shows that a fool would do well so he would keep his mouth shut and 18:2 stating that he cannot. Implied by contrast in this verse is that a fool is a man of many words, one that speaks irrationally, unintelligibly, and the classic "doesn't think before you speak" person. The wise person instead is one who has real weight in his words.
Application: The weight of words has always been something I thought about as a student, but even more so as a pastor. I realize that I should not speak in such ways to students that I'm losing patience with or towards staff that come late on a regular basis. I am a classic patronizer. One who feels superior towards others and mock them for their inability to do so. I do it with a smile on my face and sometime in jest, but I think that's not the way to do it. To apply this QT, I will not meet adverse situations with an attitude, but will address them directly in regards to ministry.
